Full Itinerary

Day 1: Arusha to Stone Town

After lunch at Arusha Coffee Lodge and a final stroll through Shanga’s arts workshops, you transfer to Arusha Airport for the flight to Zanzibar. On arrival you make your way to Stone Town and check into The Swahili House, housed in a restored 19th-century Indian merchant’s residence once occupied by Sultan’s families.

The building retains polished stone floors, carved teak doors and original Swahili décor while offering air conditioning, hot water and spacious rooms in three categories: Deluxe, Suites and Sultan Suites. You might spend the late afternoon exploring nearby landmarks or simply relax on the rooftop terrace by the plunge pool.

Dinner follows at the hotel’s restaurant which features fresh seafood and Mediterranean-tapas dishes.

Day 2: Stone Town – Full day

The day begins with a guided walk through Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the cultural nucleus of Zanzibar. Its urban fabric reflects centuries of influence from Arab, Persian, Indian, and European powers layered over indigenous Swahili culture. As you move through the old quarters you encounter coral-stone buildings, elaborately carved doors, and remnants of the Omani sultanate as well as Portuguese and British rule, each leaving distinct architectural signatures.

Lunch is independent, leaving space to explore cafés or seafood stalls along the waterfront. In the afternoon there is an option to join a local family for a cooking session inside a traditional home, learning to prepare dishes such as biryani, wali, and mseto with freshly ground spices. Later you return to your hotel to refresh before heading out again for a sunset dhow cruise with snacks and drinks. Dinner and overnight at The Swahili House, Stone Town.

Day 3: Stone Town to Fumba

After breakfast in Stone Town the day begins with a visit to Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park, the only national park in Zanzibar and home to the rare red colobus monkey. Raised wooden walkways cut through mangrove forests, giving a close view of coastal vegetation, fiddler crabs and other small wildlife that thrive in this unique ecosystem. The next stop is the Butterfly Centre, an enclosed tropical garden where hundreds of butterflies native to Zanzibar can be observed at close range.

As one of the largest exhibitions of its kind in Africa, it provides insight into local conservation efforts and the life cycle of these species. Following the excursion, the drive continues to Fumba Beach Lodge, set in a secluded part of the island’s south coast. Lunch is served on arrival, leaving the afternoon free to rest before dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Travelling by traditional dhow, the excursion explores a series of coral reefs, mangrove channels and sandy islets such as Pamunda and Miwi. The area is known for its clear waters and diverse marine life, and it is not unusual to see dolphins moving through the bay. Time is set aside for swimming and snorkelling, followed by a barbecue lunch on Pamunda Island and a short walk along the shoreline.

Later in the afternoon the dhow returns to the south coast and you transfer back to Fumba Beach Lodge. The property is set in extensive tropical gardens with cottages and suites facing the Indian Ocean, offering private terraces, open-air bathrooms and a relaxed atmosphere. Dinner is served at the lodge restaurant before overnight in this quiet coastal retreat.

Day 5: Free Time Activities in Zanzibar

After breakfast there is freedom to plan the day according to interest. The morning offers a visit to Kijichi spice farm, where the cultivation of cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla illustrates the agricultural heritage that shaped Zanzibar’s economy and culture. Later the day can be spent returning to Stone Town for sightseeing or last-minute shopping along the historic streets. Stone Town, or Mji Mkongwe, retains structures from Omani, Portuguese, and British periods, providing context to the island’s layered history.

Lunch is taken back at Fumba Beach Lodge, set on the south-western coast within Menai Bay Conservation Area, offering cottages and suites opening to the ocean, and outdoor terraces shaded by palms. The afternoon includes free time, followed by a sunset cocktail gathering on the beach and a farewell dinner featuring local seafood and Swahili cuisine. Overnight remains at Fumba Beach Lodge.
