The Rongai route covers 73 km and is usually completed in six or seven days, with the longer option giving more time to adjust to altitude. It is the only approach from the northern side of Kilimanjaro, close to the Kenyan border, and tends to be quieter than other routes. Trekkers enter through Rongai Gate and climb steadily, moving through rainforest, Afro-alpine moorland, and high-altitude desert before reaching the icy summit zone.
At 5,895 m, Uhuru Peak is the highest point in Africa and the goal of the trek. The descent is made along the Marangu route on the southeast side, offering a different landscape and a varied experience of the mountain rather than returning along the same path.

Yearly around
On arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, a representative will meet you and assist with luggage before the drive to Moshi. At Kilimanjaro Wonders Hotel, your mountain guide will go through a detailed trek briefing and check your gear to ensure everything is in place.
The hotel itself is one of Moshi’s leading properties, with modern rooms, a rooftop bar overlooking Mount Kilimanjaro, a swimming pool, and a mix of local and international dining options. After the briefing, the remainder of the day is free to relax and recover from the flight, with the hotel providing a comfortable base before the climb begins.
This morning you will drive for approximately 2-3 hours to the Rongai Nalemoru Gate near the Kenyan border. After registering at the gate, begin your climb to Uhuru Peak, the roof of Africa. During the first day, hike through forests where you may see and hear wildlife, including black and white Colobus monkeys.
Eat lunch en route before continuing to the first campsite. Rongai ascends via the less forested northern side of the mountain and is one of the least crowded routes on Kilimanjaro.

Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
After breakfast you start your climb on a trail continuing up towards Kibo. For most of the day you will be walking up slopes flanked with heather and erica with a nice view on the twin peaks of Kilimanjaro – Mawenzi and Kibo and your first glimpse of the ice fields on the Eastern crater rim.
As we approach Second Cave our cook will welcome you in the camp with boiled drinking water and hot washing water. You can put your feet up with some snacks and a hot lunch. After lunch, there is plenty of time to relax and enjoy the spirit of the camp and to take photos.
Second Cave
Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
During this day the morning is steep and here you may begin to feel the altitude. You can stop to rest and explore at the first cave. Lunch is often taken close to the second cave.
The afternoon is gentler as you contour across the moorland to camp in a sheltered valley at Kikelewa or the third cave.

Though this stage to Mawenzi Tarn is relatively short at less than 4-5 km, it is usually completed in the morning. The climb is also steep, the path shedding the moorland vegetation as it climbs steadily. The Mawenzi Tarn Hut is situated in one of the most spectacular settings, in a cirque beneath the jagged teeth of Mawenzi.
The afternoon offers you another walk up the ridge in the west for better acclimatization, and if you are lucky and the sky is clear, you will enjoy fantastic views of Kibo.

The trek to Kibo Hut takes around five to six hours across a stark alpine desert. The route climbs gradually, giving time to adjust to the thinner air. You’ll cross the Saddle, a broad sweep of barren ground that links Kibo and Mawenzi, the two main peaks of Kilimanjaro.
The landscape is open and exposed, with little vegetation, but the scale and stillness are striking. By late afternoon, you’ll arrive at Kibo Hut, base for the summit attempt.

The first half of today’s trek starts much earlier than on every other day. You’ll be woken around midnight to begin the most demanding section of the climb. Headlamps light the rocky trail as you move slowly upward, with the cold night air adding to the challenge.
The ascent is steady and requires focus, with rest stops along the way. As the horizon lightens, you push toward the crater rim and continue along to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Standing at 5,895 meters, it marks the culmination of days of effort and determination.
After standing on Uhuru Peak, the trail leads back down to Horombo Hut. The long descent can be tough on the knees, with trekking poles proving useful. The scenery shifts quickly as alpine desert gives way to moorland, offering more color and life after the stark summit zone.
By the time you reach Horombo, the air feels thicker and breathing easier. Dinner and an overnight stay at the hut provide a chance to recover.
Horombo Hut
Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Today marks the final stretch of your Kilimanjaro climb. From Horombo Hut, the trail leads steadily downhill through moorland into the forest zone. The hike takes five to seven hours, finishing at Marangu Gate where you sign out and receive your summit certificate, a small but proud memento of the climb.
After goodbyes to the mountain crew, a transfer takes you back to Moshi. Your night is spent at Kilimanjaro Wonders Hotel, a comfortable base with reliable hot showers, and a rooftop terrace where the mountain can sometimes be seen one last time. It’s a welcome return to modern comforts, marking the end of the climb and the beginning of some well-earned rest.
