The Marangu route is Kilimanjaro’s oldest and most established path, approaching the summit from the southeast. Known for its hut accommodation, it remains the only route where trekkers sleep in dormitory-style shelters rather than tents, though camping is also possible. The trail is 72 kilometres long and usually completed in five or six days. Its gradual slopes make it one of the less demanding ascents technically, but limited acclimatization time often affects success rates.
Marangu’s ascent and descent follow the same trail, so scenery is more repetitive compared to other routes. Even so, you pass through four distinct ecological zones, from rainforest to alpine desert, before reaching the arctic summit. The landscapes are still rewarding, though less varied..

Marangu Gate, Mandara Hut, Horombo Hut, Kibo Hut, Uhuru Peak and Marangu Gate

Yearly around
On arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, a representative from Nature Touch Africa will be waiting to assist with luggage and transfers. Once immigration and customs are cleared, you’ll be driven to Moshi and checked in at Panama Garden Resort.
Set on the outskirts of town, the resort offers a quiet setting with views toward Kilimanjaro on a clear day, a garden with shaded spots to relax, and a pool if you want to stretch after the flight. In the evening, your chief guide will meet you for a detailed briefing and gear check, with rental options available if needed. The rest of the day is left free for rest.
Meal Plan: Bed and Breakfast
Right after breakfast, we depart Moshi for Marangu Gate for the necessary formalities before beginning our trek. The hiking trail begins by ascending a beautiful, tropical rain forest. At the upper edge of the forest line, we have the opportunity to see blue monkeys. The trail then widens to expose beautiful hillsides until we reach Mandara Hut.

After an early breakfast, you’ll leave Mandara Hut and quickly emerge from the rainforest, entering the heath and follow an ascending path on the open moorlands to the Horombo encampment. Look for giant lobelias and groundsels. You may begin to feel the effects of the altitude. As you ascend, you’ll also begin to get your first clear views of Kibo and Mawenzi Peaks, weather permitting.
You’ll stop for lunch en route. The hike to Horombo Hut is steady and rewarding, with the landscape becoming increasingly rugged. Horombo Hut is a larger camp, bustling with trekkers, and provides excellent views of the plains below. The facilities here are similar to Mandara, with basic washrooms.

Today serves as a crucial day for acclimatization. Instead of pushing higher, you’ll spend a full day at Horombo, allowing your body more time to adjust to the altitude.
However, there’s an optional acclimatization hike to Zebra Rocks (approx. 3,980m / 13,060ft). This strange rock formation, named for its black and white stripes caused by mineral deposits, offers a gentle climb with stunning views of the surrounding landscape and Kibo Peak. The principle here is “climb high, sleep low,” which significantly aids in acclimatization and boosts your summit success rate.
You’ll return to Horombo Hut for a warm lunch and have the afternoon to rest, hydrate, and mentally prepare for the days ahead. This extra day is invaluable for minimizing the effects of altitude sickness too.

Today’s stage is long and a bit tough. The trail passes the “Last Waterpoint” which is followed by the so-called “saddle”. This nearly five-mile stretch of rubble and relative emptiness plateau connects the craters of Mawenzi and Kibo.
Today’s destination is the Kibo Hut, which is usually reached in about 5 – 6 hours. Here you will enjoy an early evening meal followed by an early night as the night will be short.

Today is the great day – Summit day! This begins at night because the lava ash is still frozen and so the ascent is easier. Your guide wakes you around 11pm, and an hour later the long and strenuous way to the summit begins. Passing the Hans Meyer Cave at 5220m, the climb slowly but surely ascends. At sunrise, you will reach Gillman’s Point (5681m), the crater rim of Kilimanjaro, where the sun will slowly start to warm up the land. You quickly forget the coldness of the night and will reach the Uhuru Peak at 5895 meters after another 1-2 hours.
Congratulations! You’ve made it to the “Roof of Africa”. The route back down follows the same path; the lava ash will now have thawed, which allows for a fast descent. On your return to Kibo Hut, a warm meal awaits you and you can regain your strength. After a 1-2-hour rest, you will continue to Horombo Hut (3700m) where you will arrive in the afternoon. After an evening meal, most mountain conquerors understandably retire early to bed!
After a good night’s sleep, your final day on the mountain is a long descent back to the Marangu Gate. You’ll retrace your steps through the moorland and back into the lush rainforest. This day is primarily downhill and can be tough on the knees, so trekking poles are highly recommended.
Upon reaching Marangu Gate, you’ll sign out of park and receive your summit certificates (green for Gilman’s Point, gold for Uhuru Peak). Your vehicle will be waiting to transfer you back to Panama Garden Resort in Moshi for a celebratory dinner, hot showers, and a much-anticipated rest.
