The Lemosho route covers about 70 km and is regarded as a mid-range option in terms of difficulty compared to other Kilimanjaro routes. Originally introduced as an alternative to the Shira route, it begins at a lower elevation and allows more gradual acclimatization. Trekkers pass through a series of ecological zones, starting with dense rainforest, then moorland, alpine desert, and eventually the arctic conditions at the summit.
Approaching from the west, the route crosses Shira Ridge and later connects with the Machame path near Lava Tower. From here it follows the Southern Circuit, passing below Kibo Peak before the final push from Barafu Camp. After summiting Uhuru Peak, the descent continues via the Mweka route to the rainforest.

On arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, a representative will meet you and assist with luggage before the drive to Moshi. At Kilimanjaro Wonders Hotel, your mountain guide will go through a detailed trek briefing and check your gear to ensure everything is in place.
The hotel itself is one of Moshi’s leading properties, with modern rooms, a rooftop bar overlooking Mount Kilimanjaro, a swimming pool, and a mix of local and international dining options. After the briefing, the remainder of the day is free to relax and recover from the flight, with the hotel providing a comfortable base before the climb begins.
After breakfast, your guides will check your trekking gear before leaving the hotel for Kilimanjaro entry gate. Then the adventure begins with a 3 hour drive to the Londorossi Park Gate, where we register and start the climb.
From here we start our trek through with an armed Park ranger. He leads us on a forest track which is inhabited by buffalo, elephant and other wildlife. If you are lucky you might see them from up close. Continuing the track we will arrive at the first campsite – Mti Mkubwa.

From the Shira Plateau we continue to the east up a ridge, passing the junction towards the peak of Kibo with its barren landscape. As we continue, our direction changes to the South East towards the Lava Tower, called the “Shark’s Tooth”. Shortly after the tower we will follow the trail to the Arrow Glacier.
We will descent down to the Barranco Camp where we take our dinner and rest. Although you end the day by gaining only 110 meters, this day is very important for acclimatization and will help your body prepare for summit day.

Barafu Camp
Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Very early in the morning (midnight to 2 am), we continue our way to the summit between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. You head in a northwesterly direction and ascend through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek. At Stella Point you will stop for a short rest and will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see. Faster hikers may view the sunrise from the summit.
From Stella Point, you may encounter snow all the way on your 1-hour ascent to the summit. Once at Uhuru Peak you have reached the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa!
From the summit we begin our descent by continuing straight down to the Mweka Camp, stopping at Barafu for lunch. You may want gaiters and trekking poles for the loose gravel going down. We arrive at Mweka Camp and enjoy our last evening on the mountain.
Mweka Camp
Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
After breakfast, we continue the descent down to the Mweka Park Gate to receive your summit certificates. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts will probably be plenty to wear (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy).
From the gate, you continue another hour to Mweka Village. A vehicle will meet you at Mweka village to drive you back to hotel in Moshi.
